Google Confirms Google Voice App for Android 3.0 in Development

google-voice-logoGoogle Voice support has confirmed that a version of the Google Voice app currently available for Android smartphones is in development for Android Honeycomb-based tablets.  This comes after complaints that the current app does not function on the Motorola Xoom tablet after attempts to sideload and install. Google Voice support is also recommending users to use the online portal in its place.

As Google Voice requires access to the voice network in its current version, a version for Honeycomb would have to function over the built-in SIP functionality in order to make outgoing calls and not anger cellular networks, as Verizon has recently blocked Skype from tablets as a result of the app making voice calls over the voice network on the Motorola Xoom instead of 3G data, forcing Verizon to block the app.
