Today’s Mobile News in Brief (May 11, 2011)

As reported here on Cell Phones Etc. and across the Web, here’s your daily brief on what happened in the world of mobile phones this Wednesday, May 11th, 2011.

Andy Rubin Confirms a New Nexus is Coming
You think? Since the Nexus One hit the scene, it’s become more or less tradition for Google to debut the newest major Android OS with a Nexus phone. And it shouldn’t be surprising they’ll possibly stick to the same game plan with Ice Cream Sandwich. Question is, when will it roll out and what exactly will it have to offer? Andy Rubin declined to reveal any specific details, but with all the hottest phones these days touting dual-core processors under the hood, we’d sorely be disappointed if the new Nexsus phone didn’t follow this trend.

Nokia N9 hits the FCC, packs more bands than a rubber tree
Yes, that’s right. The often-leaked but still unofficial Nokia N9 has just dropped by the FCC, lighting hope all across the region that this baby might actually hit the North American market. Based on the filing, this version of the N9 packs Blueooth, 2.4GHz 802.11 (b/g/n) WiFi connectivity, and get this, supports for 6 different bands, making it almost impossible to pinpoint, if ever, which carrier this is headed to. Of course, there’s still that chance that this might roll out to the public, but if it does, you can bet your horses we’ll be here to give you the heads up about it.

Sony Ericsson prepping Android Cyber-shot smartphone? [Leaked pics]
We’re throwing this one into the rumor bin, but giving it high probability marks. With Sony Ericsson lifting Android exclusivity from the Xperia family, it’s not a far fetched idea that their Cyber-shot line will soon get a dose of Android flavoring. Details are still pretty scarce at the moment, and all we’ve got is the blurry pic above, which, for all we know, could be a fake. That said, we’re willing to give this one a shot, and will be keeping a close eye on this one ’til it’s made official, or on the flip side, gets busted as a false claim.

LG Optimus 2X plagued with freezing issues, random reboots
The Optimus 2X may have earned the distinction of being the world’s first dual-core smartphone, but that doesn’t mean its already immune from problems. In fact, it’s got a couple, including hanging/freezing and rebooting, and due to LG’s delayed response, has resulted in an online petition from disappointed users. Good thing, though, that this is apparently only affecting European users. Be that as it may, the damage has been done, and we’re pretty sure people won’t be looking at LG the same way they used to.

LG Phoenix trickles into Rogers locations, $249.99 outright
Meet Rogers‘ newest Android offering, the LG Phoenix. This packs a 3.2-inch touchscreen, 3.2-megapixel camera, and runs on Android 2.2. It might not have a lot to offer, but on the good side, it’s not that expensive either. You can nab the Phoenix for just $29.99 on a 3-year contract, or $249.99 outright purchase. It’s not listed yet on their website, but it is already available in stores.
