Android Honeycomb to Challenge Apple iPad in Tablet Wars

As you are probably aware, Google unleashed all the info on their mobile tablets only operating system during the Android Honeycomb event, and the Motorola Xoom will be the first tablet to come out to play sporting Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

According to an article over on the BBC, Google unveiling Android Honeycomb signifies them ramping up the competition with Apple’s tablet darling, the Apple iPad, which has sold in excess of 15 million since launch.

The director of products for mobile at Google, Hugo Barra told the BBC…“This is a serious investment of years of design and engineering to really nail the experience for a larger screen. This is not a large phone – we wanted tablets running Honeycomb to not just be bigger but also to be better.” (Perhaps a slap at the Apple iPad there)

Apparently Mashable co-editor Ben Parr has said…“Honeycomb brings Google closer to parity with Apple and underlines the battle between these two titans. Google has its strengths especially in the cloud, with their open source platform and integration with other Google products like Gmail and Google docs. But Apple has the design edge and a vast number of apps as well as a new iPad expected in the next couple of months.”

According to the BBC article there are roughly 145 devices that run the Android operating system, and only a handful of those are tablets, and apparently according to Google it is up to hardware seller when user will see Android Honeycomb on more tablets.

Although the Motorola Xoom will be the first Android Honeycomb packing tablet to reach the public, T-Mobile and LG will probably be close behind Motorola with the release of the LG G-Slate, which also sports Honeycomb.

Google has also gone live with the new Android Market Web Store, which we reported on earlier, and you can check out a video of the Android Market Web Store by going (here).

So I figure the big question is can Google challenge the Apple iPad now that Android 3.0 Honeycomb for tablets is in the game, or does Apple still have that all important edge. Is the Motorola Xoom or LG G-Slate good enough to battle the iPad? We’d like to know our readers opinions of this subject and you can voice your opinion in our comments are below.
